Happy microbial monday! This is salmonella typhimurium and while you likely have a negative visceral reaction to hearing salmonella due to species that cause foodborne illness, this one is a big player in synbio. S. Typhimurium is being explored for cancer therapy. It can target and colonize tumors and actually enter the cancer cells. Once there, it has the ability to sense when it is inside and expresses only specific genes. Scientists use that to their advantage and can engineer it to selectively deliver a therapeutic payload or call forth the immune system. This makes S. typhimurium a great vector to deliver treatment that's much more targeted than something like chemo or radiation!
