No, I originally did this with a path tracer, but found it too slow. Used a shadow mapping & lighting method I developed myself. Works fast and is much simpler! Downside is that it's not really 3d anymore. With the path tracer I could make images like these. I'll. Keep that for a different project...

Thanks for the explanation! We use shadow mapping in our projects as well. Simpler and much faster, but gives “cruder” results which can still look spectacular depending on the scene geometry.
