Was making a portrait using some 600 Rubik’s Cubes!

This is done by setting up each cube in the required pattern to form an image collectively.

So you have to "solve" the piece before it's complied here. How do you start the design and creation process? I'm super curious.

Yes! I have to make the respective patterns by “solving” each cube & stack them up.
I design by drawing pixel patterns on iPad using colors on a cube.
Sometimes I animate by creating multiple versions of the image. Like this:
