My favorite genre, both in movies and games, is "noir." It originated in American cinema in the early 20th century. These are black-and-white crime dramas and detective stories filled with a dark atmosphere, cynical characters, femme fatales, and convoluted plots (sometimes, it's not about a complex story but rather a tangled chronology of events). The main character often navigates through all this, and they aren't always a "good guy." Their actions might even be unsettling for the audience, which is exactly what the creators intended.
