I run Plex on my NAS at home, PlexAmp as the client device on iOS, Windows, Mac. 

Plex supports remote access to your library (you can share with friends) or you can keep access local and use WireGuard to keep your phone on the local network (what I do) 

Plex transcodes FLAC files for mobile when on the go

how are you listening to it on your phone when out? Just mp3s local to your device? (p.s. I want to do this)

Nice experiment, mind blowing this was the norm just some years ago.
