1/ The plan for channels 1. We launched channels in June 2023 with /farcon and /purple. We've done a bunch of experiments since then. 2. We're optimistic about channels being *the thing* for Farcaster, i.e. why Farcaster is not just a decentralized Twitter clone 3. We're still rapidly iterating on channels...

I think channels will become the main reason to join Farcaster. I'm curious if there are any plans to implement gated channels. This would enable specialized user groups for particular niches, where access to casts and discussions could be more controlled. It would be similar to the user groups in old-school forums.

We're going to experiment. Gated channels can happen today at the client-level (just don't show casts from people who aren't on the list).

But couldn't other clients get those casts then and display them? My thought being that those groups would be like "friend circles" for specific interests (or whatever, really). In order to guarantee the privacy for those groups this would have be implemented on the protocol level, no? 1/2

This could become a money maker too, perhaps. Such usergroups could be limited in amount and thus highly priced. User groups on forums like LF, NBB etc. sold for anywhere from 5-30k lel. Ofc doesn't mean this would get adoption here, but could be worth a try if people are interested.
