- when i write an essay i usually begin with a long, formless first draft in which i attempt to just dump everything in my head on the page (or on paper). - then i begin the process of chiselling a coherent sequence of ideas from the mass of words i have. - it has just occurred to me that this process is similar to sculpting. start with a massive block of stone or marble or whatever, and make something great out of it. - interesting.
