I have a couple of Sunset books laying around here which give lots of good plant recommendations although one is for the desert.

On the West Coast there is Sunset that publishes specific garden books with recommendations for plants, I bet they have something good. The book Practical Permaculture has recommendations in the back also, and is pretty good for permaculture planting and layout.
