the data is itself, fact

but *how* the data is obtained and *what* can be concluded from the data is nuanced

if i didn't coincidentally study the hypothalamus and have a labmate who later studied tanycytes, i might not have spotted the detail

(actually it's even more specifically coincidental, i studied circadian rhythm so i know that the inverse light/dark cycle will definitely affect the transcriptome and other measurements here)

@bryanjohnson (or his team) shared the paper, which makes sense b/c it is published in nature, the most reputable journal, from the allen brain institute, a very reputable research institution (funded by the microsoft paul allen)

and this is the tricky thing about scientific findings--if we look at one paper it's very hard to draw conclusions, we need many replicating the same hypothesis through different experimental modalities

so my strongly-opinionated-lightly-held advice for farcaster folks interested in health and scientific research is...

1) always look for an alternative hypothesis when you read papers (LLMs can help with this)
2) look into systematic reviews such as those by Cochrane that consolidates data from different studies
3) remember that data is true unto the specific conditions collected

in today's episode of the /okbanger show i told @cameron that there's a lot more nuance to science and facts are made of constructed opinions

this is an example where if you look closely enough you can always draw an alternative hypothesis for the same data

they scooped bits of the brain that they claim ages faster from...an entire different set of mice altogether that lived in the dark during the daytime and under lights during nighttime

so...it's unclear whether that is true or not

i also realize our disagreements are based on this xkcd comic

physics experiments are just much cleaner than biological ones b/c they don't involve scooping brain goop

unfortunately so...though at least here, they *did* disclose their methods section to the extent where i could draw an alternative hypothesis. so good on them!

Great points! And unfortunately a large majority of studies are done by captured organizations that are paid to distort results and omit key data.
