when you're sharing writing about yourself, don't forget who you were before. my name is christin: i'm a neuroscience phd, interfaith chaplain, and i've helped 100s of students with their writing through the write of passage program. https://youtu.be/X6CzZ2fJMVI?feature=shared

there's a tendency for many of us, myself included, to skip the before state. we want to tell the story of how we are now. we want to share that, ta-da, i figured it out and here's the info. this short-circuits the appeal of an essay, which is a hero's journey in disguise anyway.

we want to know how a person went from the "before state" to the "after state" because we want to understand the trials and tribulations that the person went through in order to share this information.
