The story is inspired by the director's own experience growing up in New York, using a delicate and tender story to profile the two worlds of self-belief and family obligations. The film combines the director's family history - in the 1970s, her family ran a laundry in Brooklyn as Hong Kong immigrants - to explore the themes of identity and belonging, as well as the inner struggles of different cultural expectations. Unlike immigration themes that focus on suffering, this film presents the lives of Asian immigrants in a more gentle way, depicting the joy and contradictions of growing up from a female perspective, capturing the unique experience of this generation.
