The book Resurrection, which was published in 1899, tells the story of a nobleman named Prince Nakhliudov, who tries to compensate for the suffering and hardship he caused many years ago to a peasant girl named Maslava, who is now innocently on trial for murder.

 Tolstoy's wife says about the book Resurrection: "Resurrection is the result of life and, in fact, Tolstoy's own biography."  Tolstoy wrote this work to show the injustice of the laws instituted by man and the hypocrisy of the church.  This book also examines economic philosophy.
