A former water polo coach of mine used to say, “Don’t get weird” in games when the opponent went on a run and momentum wasn't in our favor. The key lesson: when things don’t go your way - which will inevitably happen - you have to maintain your composure. I’ve been thinking about this advice lately given the state of markets, geopolitics, and society in general. When things around you get weird, you can’t. Stay steady, and you’ll keep your judgment clear.

First pottery class underscored a meaningful lesson: Sometimes, you crank the wheel to max speed and charge full steam ahead Other times, you slow down, carefully molding your next moves with precision Both create momentum. Knowing when to shift gears makes all the difference

Was back home in SF for Fleet Week - it was awesome to see the Blue Angels soar over the Bay again The energy from the service men and women, and the overall vibe all week, brought a renewed sense of patriotism to the city Felt like SF is healing – hoping for continued progress ahead

It’s fascinating to read firsthand accounts from centuries ago. Crazy to think we have these manuscripts from our ancestors, giving us a glimpse into daily life in a totally different world We’re fortunate these documents were created, saved, and archived - imagine all those lost to time. Reading pieces like these is the closest thing to time travel Another historical autobiography I loved is Benjamin Franklin’s. Full of wisdom and insight into 1700s life in Philadelphia, London, NYC… It’s a great adventure

Reading Bernal Diaz del Castillo’s firsthand account of the conquest of New Spain/Mexico (1568) highlights how Francisco Gomara’s earlier popular account (1552) distorted events to glorify Hernan Cortes. Gomara never visited the Americas Diaz del Castillo’s passage shows why primary sources matter. History can be twisted to fit narratives. This is especially relevant today.

Fascinating stories about the early Dutch settlers of Manhattan in "The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony That Shaped America" Russell Shorto wonderfully explains how Dutch openness to social, political, and religious freedoms influenced America’s founding principles Learning about the events that occurred at the New Amsterdam settlement in lower Manhattan brings a deeper appreciation for NYC’s rich history and its evolution into the metropolis it is today, 400 years after the Dutch first settled here

U.S.' current approach w Ukraine/Russia is very similar to FDR's "methods-short-of-war" strategy in the lead-up to WW2 Initially, FDR opposed sending American troops to "European fields" And at this point, supplying Britain/France with munitions was a key foreign policy issue https://i.imgur.com/HCUHCyN.jpg

On the idea that memes can "possess" the brain If organisms (e.g. parasites) can alter the body states of other organisms, then so too can ideas (memes) https://i.imgur.com/aOP4Q7F.jpg
