Polls taken 4 years before election day are meaningless. The Democratic party tends to not give candidates second chances. With the exception of Biden, every Democratic President in recent history was almost completely unknown 4 years before they were elected.

Yep. Still this poll is an indication of a sentiment that really troubles me.

People are just using Harris as a placeholder candidate in their minds because they're used to her being a candidate. This same poll in November 1988 probably would have had Dukakis doing the same numbers.

On this one I don't agree with you. I don't really buy into the "placeholder theory". They could've easily said someone else, like Michelle Obama or sth. It's overwhelmingly Harris.

Michelle Obama has never run for office, so that would be a weird choice, even if she's well liked by Democrats. The people responding to this poll are Democratic voters, so almost all of them literally voted for Harris just a few weeks ago. Of course they're going to still see her as the best option. That will change once reality sets in and other people start to make themselves more visible.

To be clear M. Obama never running is irrelevant, Dems still were speculating her name when Biden dropped out. I just gave her as an example for placeholder. Again, I agree with you that over time this will disappear. I disagree with you that this isn't problematic. It tells you that these voters aren't thinking for themselves anything else for the future beyond what they were told to vote for recently. It's a cult signal, apoliticism signal, lack of imagination signal - call it what you want, it's a problem.
