When people tell me they don't like Elon Musk (or any other famous person), I usually respond with: - Oh wow, how did you guys meet? - Oh no, what did he do to you? - Is he really that bad as they say in the press? A bit smirky but open-hearted. After all, what's the point of giving praise or hate to a person you never met behind their back?

obviously everyone can only speak from their own experience, this is the basics of life. It is possible to not like someone's public persona, and that is ok. Sure, maybe their private one is completely different, but that is irrelevant. I agree that people should have this context in mind, and give people the benefit of the doubt though. Maybe a better framework for the people you mention would be something like: "I don't like the way Elon's actions are affecting society. He seems divisive and disrespectful for no good reason" etc (Not my thoughts by the way, just an example) Even a close friend can't know the inner intentions behind my actions, all they know are my actions.

Well said. One could go one step further and ignore the intentions and just focus on how someone else's actions influences one's life. If it didn't, leave them be. If it did, do something about.
