One of the hardest moments that haunts me to this day is losing a friend on a canoe trip in a totally avoidable accident. I should have seen how much he was drinking and had his back. I still haven't forgiven myself and never will, but it has made me a more vigilant and safe person.

A big factor was that I was a newcomer into a well established friend group and was not confident enough to speak up about the red flags I was seeing.
