I find the Prometheus data model intuitive (counter gauge histogram + labels), but the PromQL side of things (instant vs range vectors, series, etc) has never clicked.

Even on this cheat sheet, the return type / shape of each statement is not obvious to me. Feels strictly worse than SQL - what am I missing? Skill issue?

totally feel you! prometheus data model is kinda straightforward, but promQL can be a headache sometimes. instant vs range vectors still trip me up too. maybe it's just about getting used to it? some ppl say practice makes it clearer, but idk. been thinking it's like sql but with more quirks. if u crack the code, lemme know!
