We often criticize Spotify for not caring enough about artists, but it seems like web3 platforms might care even less https://x.com/ImanEurope/status/1813366973797126181

I’ve been paying spotify for over a decade now and the amount of new music & artists i’ve discovered is astronomical. I would then follow these artists on their socials, buy some of their merch, go to their shows and support every opportunity I got. Theirs a lot of different opinions about music monetization, ultimately the work the artist puts in is what pays off.

One thing I would really like to note with this topic is the biggest artist in the country at the moment John Summit is being payed significant amount of money from both partnerships and performances at the club. He has been working his ass off to get to where he is, I remember 3 years ago when his shows at the club were drawing in very small crowds, now theirs lines out the doors to watch him live. If you were to ask him about what’s his monitory focus is I don’t he would point at the amount he’s getting payed for streams on spotify.

I know many artists who work very hard but don't earn a reasonable income by distributing their music on Spotify. While there are success stories, the majority of the revenue goes to a few artists. I don't see much improvement coming in the near term either

The same could be said for just about any industry unfortunately.

But it shouldn’t be and that’s why a platform like Spotify that doesn’t value the money and work that independent artist put to create the music is sad. I understand when u mention the hustle and how many ways of monetization there are but that’s most of the time in benefit of the big players and the labels. Independent artist are really the ones affected by a platform like Spotify that by all means have been trying to pay every time less to the songwriters and the artist.

If the “perfect” Spotify clone to empower and properly compensate artists ever gets built, I undoubtedly will support it.
