One week in and having trouble coming to terms with how much of an adjustment it has been going from one kid to two. My wife and I always swore we wouldn’t let having kids stop us from enjoying our favorite pastimes (like recreational sports, hiking, camping, etc) and tbh we’ve lived up to that pretty well since having our first. But the toddler plus a newborn is just a lot, I find myself wondering how people have more than 2 (or how single parents survive at all.) Tried going to a soccer game yesterday and it was so hard on my wife with me just being gone for 2 hours that I’ve opted out the rest of the season for my other soccer and volleyball teams. I know we’ll get into a flow state eventually and of course it’s all 100% worth it, but I really underestimated the adjustment for sure! (Obvious caveat that I love both my boys and wouldn’t change anything for the world. )

My youngest is 15mo now and this has not really changed for me. It why I say no to travel and everyone is like “but into Chris you have to go!” (Farcon, Nouns Town) and I’m like yeah ok I have much more important things to do. In the end you lose (at least temporarily) your own time and need to even more ruthlessly propritoze high value events. I miss simple things too like drinking coffee and reading the news in the morning in peace (let alone walking to the farmers market to get something delicious). But the bright side is he’s old enough to play with her and they do entertain each other at least for 20m a day and I see that growing.

But the really really cool part is they have different personalities and learning styles, so everything you learn anew about life with the first one you learn again or enhance that learning with a slightly different perspective and it’s pretty awesome.
