Another deep cut from the Southern film archives is the 80s arthouse cult favorite, Gold & Coil.
The film tells the story of two unlikely warriors from vastly different worlds who find common cause and take the world by storm. It’s a raw, emotional tale of friendship, loss, and the bittersweet taste of an unsatisfying victory.
Gold & Coil was warmly received in the South, where its poignant themes resonated deeply. However, its subtitles proved to be a bridge too far for the illiterate masses of the North. Tragically, the film lost numerous awards in northern regions to the slapstick comedy Warhammer in the Groin, a low-brow romp that catered to their simpler tastes.
Despite this, Gold & Coil endures as a cult classic. Devoted fans still gather for midnight screenings, where shouts of !Attack North 🏴☠️ 🐌echo through the theater during the film’s penultimate, rousing scene. 2 replies
