This doesn't fit into American exceptionalism, but I wish American liberals had studied political trends in other countries in the 2000s. So many liberals became more politicized only when Trump became a candidate.
Long-standing authoritarians like Orban, Erdogan, Putin didn't come out of nowhere. Arab Spring didn't come out of nowhere. Even Obama the Candidate (not the president) didn't come out of nowhere.
Populism and its variables; social media, viral memes, youth energy don't just bring votes. They shape narratives, they bring creativity, they knock on doors, they hold events.
Instead of embracing populism, liberal leaders snubbed their energetic left-wing twice, and they've turned the Democrat Party into a party with no values: Certainly not a party for the people, but also not pro-corporate enough like the GOP. Arrogant elitism disguised as "decency".
