Your favorite songwriter is very unlikely to be a virtuoso. To truly master an instrument in a way that studio and other for-hire musicians must, it is necessary to not be too creative. Creativity gets in the way of acquiring as many skills as possible efficiently.

Why do you think it is so rare to understand this?

bc most people have never/will never play an instrument just like most people have never/will never make a wooden chair

it’s not their world and musicians don’t really talk about artists vs performers bc imo the “magic” of music goes away when you realize that parts of it are mostly reps/grit/woodshedding

ofc dude - it also doesn’t help that most modern artists are like “artists” first and not “instrument” musicians yknow?

Like they go together but the theater kid/chorus kid -> pop star pipeline is related but v diff in a lot of ways to the band kid pipeline
