most generally, it using some reward to motivate an action/behavior that is healthy for a project/protocol in web3, we can run those incentive mechanisms trustlessly on-chain good example is liquidity mining: users provide liquidity on a specific AMM pair (useful for the project) and receive project tokens (reward)
