A solar eruption that occurred on June 25th has reached Earth and triggered severe geomagnetic storm conditions. This eruption in particular wasn't tied to a solar flare, but it was instead provoked by a filament (an often loop-shaped cooler plasma and magnetic field structure tied to the Sun's photosphere) that got ejected off the Sun's corona.
