An EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) executes smart contracts on Ethereum. An L2 (Layer 2) is a secondary framework to improve scalability and speed by processing transactions off-chain. A chain can be L2 without being EVM-compatible, meaning it scales the blockchain without using the EVM. EVM compatibility eases integration of Ethereum dApps.
