It is always a moment of excitement and joy when I come across an unexpected wolf track when I’m alone in the backcountry far from Yellowstone. The length of the track is 5.5 inches.

GM. Elegant Trogon eating pyracantha berries. Fun to join other birders here in Madera Canyon Arizona and add the Elegant Trogon to our “lifer” lists after two days of looking and waiting to see it.

A coyote in the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge near the Colorado River on the Arizona side. This coyote has an interestingly shaped face. They are definitely smaller here than our coyotes in Yellowstone and of course don’t have a thick winter coat here in the desert.

Cheers to a great 2025 for all. I believe that my hard-core birder friends would back me up on this – the technical term for this flock of Yellow-headed and Red-winged Blackbirds is a big ass flock of birds. Photographed at the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona.

GM Two female Wild Burros and a foal at sunset in the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge in Southwest Arizona. Looks like they had just some back from feeding and cooling off in the muddy marsh area along the Colorado River.

I’m happy to have this black bear sow back in the den that we can see in the Yellowstone Northern Range. Here she takes advantage of a warm day to soak up some rays.

Look at those claws! The female grizzly known as Jam was digging in the June rain this year in Yellowstone. The front paw claws of younger female grizzlies are up to 4 inches long, while claws of older males in Yellowstone may be 6 inches long.
