Watching wildlife isn’t always pleasant for our human sensibilities. Here a coyote drags a red dog (baby bison) carcass away from the road with the Lamar River in the background. Sadly, the red dog had been killed by a car on the park road. From May 2024 in Yellowstone.

Great to be back home in Gardiner and Yellowstone. I couldn’t find any wolves on Saturday, but a group of us watched this beautiful male coyote at Confluence in Lamar Valley.

It is always a moment of excitement and joy when I come across an unexpected wolf track when I’m alone in the backcountry far from Yellowstone. The length of the track is 5.5 inches.

A Coues Deer buck in an oak forested canyon in the mountains above the desert in Southern Arizona. Coues Deer are a subspecies of white-tailed deer that are native to the desert southwest and Arizona. Bucks are about 30 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh up to 100 pounds. For those of you familiar with white-tailed deer, check out his different tail in photo #2.

GM. Elegant Trogon eating pyracantha berries. Fun to join other birders here in Madera Canyon Arizona and add the Elegant Trogon to our “lifer” lists after two days of looking and waiting to see it.

A coyote in the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge near the Colorado River on the Arizona side. This coyote has an interestingly shaped face. They are definitely smaller here than our coyotes in Yellowstone and of course don’t have a thick winter coat here in the desert.

Cheers to a great 2025 for all. I believe that my hard-core birder friends would back me up on this – the technical term for this flock of Yellow-headed and Red-winged Blackbirds is a big ass flock of birds. Photographed at the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona.

I’m happy to have this black bear sow back in the den that we can see in the Yellowstone Northern Range. Here she takes advantage of a warm day to soak up some rays.
