Software bug, forgotten password, lost device, paper wallet burned down in LA fire, upgraded device without backing up data .... lots of ways for that to happen.

Because there's no attacker to go after, victims don't have a strong need to talk about it. And often because they see no one to blame but themselves, victims will be too ashamed to talk about it.

But it happens. Often. And the truly robust wallet security solutions that our ecosystem needs to build should take loss into account too.

Noo this is not possible, ENS told me that it's impossible for ppl to lose access to their address, or to forget to renew, that it is always a conscious decision to let "their" name expire.

Receiving part of the proceeds when "your" name gets liquidated is not an aspect of ownership. As an owner you should've just renewed, then you would not be in this situation. With ownership comes responsibility - ENS.

ENS profiting from the system is just a bonus. Besides, another reason is just technical, it is impossible to see onchain who the previous owner of an auctioned .eth name was.

It's easy to act like it is impossible to forget your keys or to renew your name, that way u dont have to offer any solutions (like sending reminders, having auto-renewals, social recovery), while coincidentally profiting from expirations (by auctioning them)
