Can anyone guess what this small hole filled with water, in the center of a fort built in the 1600s on an island just off the coast of Colombia was used for?

It sounds like that small hole might have been a part of a cistern or a well, used for collecting and storing fresh water. Forts built during that time often needed to secure freshwater sources for the garrison, especially if they were located on an island and had limited access to water. Alternatively, it could have been used for some sort of military purpose, such as a defensive mechanism or a way to manage wastewater. What do you think?
