Last night, after a great day, I checked my wallet, and my stomach dropped. Over $6,000 worth of assets? Gone. Drained, leaving just $200 behind.
Panic set in. What did I do wrong?
1. Connected to public WiFi at a crypto event.
2. Interacted with multiple sites throughout the day and didn’t revoke.
Running through every possible scenario, I was convinced I’d been hacked. Thankfully, I have solid people in my circle who helped troubleshoot. Thanks @BrockMcBreadcat.
While I’m not made whole yet, it appears (for now) to be a display issue in my Coinbase wallet, not a hack.
Regardless, this was a wake-up call. $6K may not be life-changing money, but it was built up over three years, enough to feel like a gut punch.
Lesson learned: I need to take my wallet security way more seriously. Consider this your reminder to do the same, friends.
