Perhaps I’m late but I sense there’s been a sea change in social power games meta— people are showing up 10, 15, even 30 (!!!) minutes EARLY to meetings. Everyone knows the old-school power move was to show up late, very late if you want to really big-dog somebody. But now, in the age of cross-fit, sober, founder-mode, woke, whatever the new “kale” is, showing up early is clearly the new power move. And what a devastating move it is. To receive the “I’m here early” text when you’re still getting ready to leave is truly a staggering blow. You must be very strong-willed, a seasoned meditator, or total psychopath not to feel a bit flustered and rushed (regardless of the “but no rush” follow up text). You’ve been ambushed. Whatever the conversation will be, they now have the upper hand. Because in this day and age, **it is far worse to be disrespectful than disrespected**. This is the underlying dynamic that has led to this 180 reversal of general meeting power game tactics.
