One of the first things I noticed about the snowy island of Hokkaido, is that they don’t seem to use rock salt on their roads. Or they use a lot less of it. This is significantly better for the environment.

Everyone now associates these vending machines with Japan. The result is an accidental placemaking strategy. It has become part of their brand, which is a positive thing. Places need things that are unique to them in order to be memorable.
