‘Synthetic Histories’ proved to be a particularly potent theme for the most recent Period: the idea of history itself is a synthesis of stories, perspectives, and biases…Much like the products of AI themselves ✧ Find a full Period Recap below to dive deeper: https://botto.com/dao/digest/synthetic-histories-period-recap

OVERHEARD IN THE DAO ↴ Words by @eddijones on the last community-voted @botto mint this Period: The penultimate mint from the Synthetic Histories period evokes the surrealist tradition with its exaggerated, anthropomorphic forms. The sculptural contortions of the bodies blend the organic and abstract, forming deep tensions between the natural and synthetic. Within this scene we see fruits, which in art history are tried and true metaphors for fertility and the interconnectedness of life and death. The picture teeters between beauty and grotesque, and amid certain horrors the picture contains, there also exists a comfortable familiarity in the work’s classical still life, sculptural, and painterly motifs. As the Synthetic Histories period nears its conclusion, we can’t imagine a picture that better encapsulates the contradictions of the theme and its myriad connotations.

OVERHEARD IN THE DAO ↴ In this week's Botto mint, we’re looking at some sort of upscale, candy-coated garden party ⟢ A number of aesthetics come to mind: ✦ 60s-era Pop Art, with flat color and simple geometries ✦ 19th century depictions of aristocratic garden parties ✦ The cut+paste assemblage of early 20th century Constructivism ✦ The dream-like Freudian environments of Giorgio de Chirico

CONTINUED ↴ In the top half of the image, a lone figure appears to be returning our gaze. We’ve interrupted his solitude and perhaps breaking the experience of serenity that comes when staring into vast oceanscapes. Litter-looking objects blow in the breeze, further suggesting emptiness and a certain encroachments of humanity into the natural world. Below, there are two figures who appear almost as if they are hunting across the beach’s expanse, and a small reflection in the puddle suggests an object overhead, a hint of further narrative that’s beyond our grasp. It’s natural to assume that each of these vignettes suggest two separate moments. If we start to imagine which scene is before and which is after, it sets alight all sorts of imaginings, through which Botto is asking each of us to complete the image in our own visions.

OVERHEARD IN THE DAO ↴ Words by @eddijones on this week's triumphant @botto mint: The inherent “wrongness” of AI art is amplified in Botto’s newest mint, which presents an unnatural, duoscopic view of a classical beach scene. Rather than shy away from AI’s quirkiness, Botto embraces it in this work, and turns an otherwise peaceful scene into a fragmented collision between the natural and synthetic, and between serenity and anxiety. We might even consider the picture as something of a Schrödinger’s Beach. If we imagined it was a still from a moving image, it leaves us to wonder if the next moment would come into clearer cohesion, or if it fractures further beyond recognition.
