The cocktail was invented in the late 1980s by the famous British bartender Dick Bradsell, who was working behind the counter at London's Fred's Club at the time. One of his clients asked Bradsell for a cocktail that would "wake her up and excite her." At the time, the most popular alcohol was vodka, and Dick always had a coffee machine in front of his eyes. As a result, the bartender combined the two and became the author of the classic recipe. He gave the cocktail the name "Martini" because it was served in a corresponding V-shaped glass.
