I naively thought that messaging was as simple as using a Ethereum address as a public key and encrypting with your Ethereum private key. But the world has come a long way since Signal, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Ratchet_Algorithm Both WhatsApp and Apple iMessage use a version of this.

So does Waku, which is what is under the hood of XMTP, which is protocol used by LensProtocol for DMs. Waku is from EthStatus, also used by Status wallet, and also behind WalletConnect v2.

Waku is on top of libp2p. It is supposed to supersede Whisper for generalized (M2M, P2P) messaging, one of the 3 pillars of Ethereum originally envisioned. https://waku.org/

Same people also intentionally researched and implemented the Rate Limiting Nullifier (RLN) to be used to prevent spam in network of anonymous nodes messaging each other. Also related is Nimbus the Ethereum beacon chain client with focus on being able to run on low power hardware.
