I'd like to see communities selectively allow for some content to be public, but make the default private.

Hard to make that work in a permissionless way without a centralized server. I suspect there will be permissioned off-protocol experiences that use Farcaster for identity, graph, etc.

Fair. Let the protocol be the firehose of all information, and let the nodes decide what to filter and make available, and in what way (public/private). That encapsulate the thinking?

Yes, focus in the near-term for the protocol is about public and real-time distribution and global state. Longer term could see more private primitives.
