This cast about technological transformations deserves additional clarity: 1. Yes, speculation is a feature and not a bug of technological revolutions. Greed drives development and adoption. 2. No, that does not mean everyone eventually wins. In fact, it’s usually a lopsided outcome. 1/3

3. These periods are usually accompanied by massive social dislocations as some benefit from the change while most do not. 4. Over the long arc it’s a positive outcome on the whole, but that arc could span a generation and often leaves some economic historians asking: “do the ends justify the means?” 2/3
