When are patents actually worth pursuing? (Looking for the 301 level answer)

Probably once you’ve “reduced something to practice” and you think it might have some commercial value. Depends a lot on your end strategy, some ppl might not want to disclose anything and would rather keep it as a trade secret.

Also when your competitors are litigious, it’s worth pursuing patents to use as negotiating leverage if they come after you.

I would say they are worth pursuing when you are operating in a space with a lot of close competition to help distinguish your product over the competition and prevent your competitors from implementing a similar product if yours starts to gain traction.
