Have you written a book that was picked up by a major publishing house? What advice would you give to a first time non-fiction writer?

my book (amazon.com/Dont-Live-Thousand-Years-Dimensions/dp/B0CHL7WRYM) hasn't been picked up by a major publishing house 😅 my advice? 1. Find an agent asap 2. Don't start writing the book until you get an agent (manuscripts that are ready are less likely to be interesting to agents)

What's the key to finding an agent? Is the pitch process similar to pitching a startup?

somewhat! it's called a query and usually you're emailing an agent/agency with a proposal for your non-fiction title it's also based on how many books you might potentially sell (you do the marketing, not the publishers in most cases) it's also easily hacked by proximity to agents so yeah, pretty much like raising!

Just a proposed title!? No abstract? Don't the major publishing houses help with distribution?

probably title + full proposal (i.e., what the book will be about) even major publishing houses can promote so many titles :) there are a lot of books published annually and only a dozen or so are promoted properly but yeah, even they are like "go promote the book on your own peasant"

I find it surprising that they don't help with book distributor deals (Barnes & Noble in the US, for example; or influencers/podcasts etc). Very good to know. What then is the purpose of a publisher other than just printing it onto paper?

oh, no, they do distribute the books among bookstores — it's just no one buys the books anyway without promo :)) but amazon self-publishing also does this publishers are usually for printing, yes + royalties might be better than kindle self publishing + for non-fiction you get a deal and get some $ upfront
