On this day 4th of June in 1796, Napoleon Bonaparte commanded to start the Siege of Mantua, which resulted in the exclusion of Austrians from northern Italy. After the Rivoli disaster, Austrians held out two more weeks before capitulating on February 2nd. Here's a remarkable painting of that siege.
