I totally agree, I don’t think they necessarily have to be best friends but there should be a level of comfort in children seeking comfort and friendship in their parents.

It depends what you mean by friends I guess. Parents should always have some level of responsibility and oversight in all situations rather than just being irresponsible. My parent tried to be my friend by providing alcohol at a young age... Not a good idea!
But trying to be your kids friend in a good way - be honest, be accountable, be there when needed for emotional support, take time to listen and show them you hear them. That's how to be a parent that a kid will come talk to when it's really important.
