While I was working for His Majesty’s Prison, there are two incidents that happened which reinforced my decision never to do stuff that will lead me to prison. 1. The first was on a certain Wednesday. I got into the prison and headed towards my wing to start my shift. Then, I was radioed for and told to come to the CSU (central segregation unit) for a constant watch duty. When I arrived there, what I saw was enough to make anyone puke. The cell was littered with dried blood, puke and food (sandwich). The inmate within the cell had upturned his bed and was sitting on the floor with just a cover cloth. The custom in this shift is to just sit down and watch the prisoner. If something happens, you radio through to the available CM. So, I sat down and started watching this young lad of around 26. He wouldn’t speak and kept muttering stuff. Then, he stretched his arms and bit into it seriously, drawing blood. I radioed for code red and there wasn’t much scampering from the officers in the CSU

because they knew it would be from his cell. When they came, they asked if he needed anything and he remained mum. Paramedics from outside were called but the guy refused any attempt for them to stitch him up. The others left and I remained to keep watching this young man, obviously tormented by demons and deep mental health problems, as he kept biting, sucking his blood and spitting it out. 2. The second incident was on a particular Friday when I was called from my wing to the ‘old timers wing.’ I was told it would be a bed watch shift where we go with a prisoner to the hospital outside for a checkup or surgery.
