The Sistine Madonna is a famous painting created by Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio), an Italian Renaissance artist, between 1512 and 1513. It was commissioned by Pope Julius II for the San Sisto Monastery in Piacenza, Italy. The painting is a masterful depiction of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, flanked by Saint Sixtus and Saint Barbara. At the bottom of the composition, there are two cherubs, or angels, who have become iconic in their own right, often reproduced in various forms of popular culture
