What is the root of “you can just do things?” Where does it come from in modern society? When did we stop believing in our own basic agency?

For millennium people have believed that active omnipresent forces control life and the afterlife…prescribing to dogma that demands “not to trust the self but to trust the gods” Feels like individual agency in larger societies have been the exception. I don’t know, just thinking out loud, would love someone with more deep history and religious knowledge to chime in here
