Can't recall how this book ended up on my radar, but this quote describing 20th-century America has some obvious parallels to today's MAGA: "...the newly arrived immigrants lacked the political awareness required to obtain direct concessions from the government in the shape of social welfare legislation or labor codes. They soon learned, however, to obtain indirect favors by promising their support to the local ward organization of the party."
