In 1930 Company founder Paul V. Galvin created the brand Motorola for the car radio—linking "motor" (for motorcar) with "ola" (which implied sound). Thus the Motorola brand meant sound in motion.

It all started around 1920 when Paul Galvin traveled to Chicago in search of work. After working for several local battery companies and several attempts at starting his own business, he and his brother, Joe Galvin, opened the Galvin Factory in 1928.
