Masks act as a physical barrier between the wearer's mouth and nose and the outside environment. This barrier prevents the release of respiratory droplets that may contain viruses or bacteria into the air. When an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, they release these droplets into the air, which can then be inhaled by others. By wearing a mask, an infected person can reduce the amount of these droplets that are released into the air, thereby reducing the risk of transmission.
