Attack on the work: On January 16, 1913, Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan were stabbed three times with a knife by a 29-year-old iconoclast, the son of a furniture maker. The curator of the Tretyakov Gallery, Georgy Khruslov, upon learning of the vandalism of the canvas, threw himself under a train. The painting was restored to almost its original state with the help of Repin. In May 2018, the canvas was again attacked at the Tretyakov Gallery by a drunken visitor who broke its protective glass with a metal bar. The painting was seriously damaged. The central part of the work, which depicts the Tsarevich, is pierced in three places.

Oh no. To destroy is simple but to create is fraught and complex.
