Masks in Japanese theater NO are often made so skillfully that when the angle or lighting changes, the "facial expression" of the character changes. So, with a slightly lowered head, the mask acquires a sad expression, and the full face — a happy one. The subtle play of the masks' moods gives the whole production a special mystery. Initially, the masks were made by the actors themselves, but now individual families are doing this, who keep the traditions of creating masks from generation to generation.
