interesting book especially for the time it was written (1988). the author is a political scientist from china who visited various places in the us and notes down his observations in a very non academic way.

some parts of it were a bit boring because he goes too much into the weeds of how governance works at various levels: cities, states, villages and federal etc.

don’t know how widely read this book is in china or in the west. i never heard of it until i saw peter theil mention it in one of his talks

most interesting bits are the contradictions that he observes for eg: he would say something like america is the most prosperous country in the world yet he observes homelessness ans crimes everywhere. and there are other examples in this the book
