The average human reading speed is 249 words per minute, and the average English word has 5.1 characters. So a person reading sustains a processing rate (OCR + comprehension) of 21 bytes per second.

Likewise, the average typing speed is 40 words per minute, or 3.4 bytes per second. We do this by spelling out every letter of every word in the correct order without even consciously thinking about it.

We take reading and typing for granted, but they’re kind of amazing feats to process entirely on wetware

I always say we humans really don’t know how much more we are capable of yet, it’s only visible in a handful of humans and that’s still not full potential.

If you took all the outliers — the greatest artists, writers, mathematicians, athletes, etc of all time and put them in a room, I think it’d become more obvious how awesome human performance is at the edge, when deliberate practice combines with natural talent / genetic predisposition. It’s incredible what the brain is capable of at its very best.

It’s the relatively low baseline / average that is the real tragedy

To probably eradicate that low baseline forever the human race will have to find a permanent solution to quality education, socioeconomic barriers, lack of exposure to opportunities, and even cultural or systemic discouragement of creativity or critical thinking.
